Halloween is all about orange and black but this year, it can be green too! Having a green Halloween will make for a happier planet. The following tips and ideas can be can be used to make any holiday more environmentally friendly. Here’s a list of ways you can be more environmentally conscious when throwing a green Halloween party:
When purchasing Halloween candy, you might be tempted to purchase big variety bags at your local big-box store. But instead, make your own Halloween treats or buy locally made candy. Locally made and sold candy is better for the environment because mass-manufactured candy needs to travel hundreds of miles, using up gas and emitting carbons. It’s also a great for your local economy to support mom and pop shops and local businesses.
When choosing Halloween costumes, consider organizing a neighborhood Halloween costume swap or recycle costumes within your own family. Make the most of hand-me-downs. If you’re crafty, make your family’s costumes using fabric purchased at a local store and instructions which can easily be found online or in magazines.
Instead of using disposable, paper tablecloths at your Halloween party, use flat bed sheets as tablecloths. They are cheaper than cloth tablecloths and more friendly to the environment than their disposable counterparts. Flat bed sheets are also easy to clean, just toss in the washing machine!
For Halloween decorations, also consider having a neighborhood swap. Give away items you may no longer want or need and collect on items that friends and neighbors want to give away. Make your own decorations or reuse what you’ve used in years prior.
